Two new varieties of black pepper have been discovered from forest cover of the Western Ghats. The researchers discovered these varieties from Idukki and Wayanad districts of Kerala. They have helmet shaped subsidiary petals.
The variety discovered from Wayanad has small wick like structures of size 3 cm. While the variety discovered from Idukki has round shape seeds.
The team behind the discovery of the varieties are botany academician of Alappuzha SD College Dr Jose Mathew, senior technical officer of Kalpatta Swaminathan Research Foundation Salim Pichin, botany professor of Kerala University Dr PM Radhamani and botany academician of Chembazhanthi SN College Dr SS Usha.
The latest issue of a scientific journal published from Finland have published about the discovery.
