Lockdown-like restrictions in Kerala on Sundays as COVID cases spike

With COVID cases increasing, the state government has decided to impose lockdown-like restrictions on Sundays.

The cabinet on Thursday decided to have strict curbs in place on the upcoming Sundays, January 23 and 30.

Only essential services will be permitted on these days, the government has said.

The latest directive is unclear on the functioning of educational institutions. On Wednesday, the government had issued guidelines advising offline classes for students in 10th, plus-one and plus-two.

The cabinet has yet to announce a verdict on the functioning of colleges.

Strict restrictions in 5 districts
All public events have been cancelled in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Wayanad where the number of patients is in excess of the facilities available.

The number of participants for private events in these districts has been reduced from 50 to 20.

The restrictions will be applicable for religious events as well.

Meanwhile, in the districts of Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam, where facilities are adequate as of now, social, cultural and religious functions are permitted with no more than 50 persons in attendance.
