Many students eagerly find shortcuts to evade their homework and assignments either by copying from a learning guide, seeking the tuition master’s help, copying down from the assignment shared in the classmates’ Whatsapp group etc. Homework has a definite purpose in the learning process according to the science of Pedagogy. It is the participation of the student in the learning process and as a result it has a great constructive purpose in the life of a student. It is true that if homework is completed accurately, not only would your general knowledge and grade improve but also you would increase mastery of basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, spelling and mathematics.
As children grow older, homework and the amount of time engaged in homework, increases in importance. For teachers homework is an effective way to provide additional instruction through practice. We get the subject matter thorough since we are deeply involved in this type of learning process. Homework is a matter of responsibility too. We bring an assignment home, gather and organize necessary materials to complete the assignment, return the assignment and receive a grade. This process strengthens our sense of responsibility and also our level of self-confidence. Development of personal skills such as time management also occurs simultaneously by completing homework in the stipulated time.
Homework is necessary because reviewing is very important in the learning process. Our memory is divided into three parts namely temporary memory, short term memory and long term memory. Unless we recollect the matter of our day’s class within 24 hours the great chunk of it will be forgotten and lost from the temporary memory part of the brain. But by recalling the matter in the evening through homework we could safely transfer the matter from temporary memory to short term and long term memory. As many students do not review their study materials on their own, homework is the best way to make them review their classes.
Doing your homework also makes you prepared and more equipped for the next class. If you fail to do your homework, you will probably not understand what the teacher would be teaching during the next class. Homework also offers schools an opportunity to let parents know what their children are learning. Homework is thus the bridge that joins schools and parents. Through homework parents can also involve in their child’s learning process. Homework helps you to learn to use resources, such as libraries, reference materials, and websites to find information. It encourages you to explore subjects more fully than classroom time permits. Doing your homework regularly exposes you to more knowledge and understanding on the importance of certain subjects you never knew were important to your life and success.
Homework helps teachers to evaluate how much their students understand or even how much they have been listening. It is a proven fact that schools which give emphasis for homework have better exams results than schools that do not. To conclude, Homework is simply a practice. You can never become perfect at anything without good practice. There are many benefits of engaging in regular practice: Practice only helps you to become a better person by increasing your overall performance, memory, brain power, and increases your willpower. So let us start loving our homework.
