Attukal Pongala: Offerings restricted to homes, only 200 people on temple premises

The much anticipated religious festival of Attukal Pongala will be restricted to homes this year. The decision comes in the backdrop of an increase in Covid-19 cases in the state.

A covid review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also decided that only 200 people will be allowed to attend the Pongala on the temple premises. The festival is scheduled to be held at the Attukal Devi Temple from February 9 to February 18. The Pongala would be on February 17.

The event was similarly hosted last year as well. Devotees were allowed to visit the temple during the festival following the Covid protocols. The offering and rituals in the temple were also performed without crowds.

Earlier, the local authorities and temple trust had made preparations to conduct the Attukal festival in a full-fledged manner. However, the increase in covid cases and subsequent restrictions in the district hampered the plans.
