Kerala on Thursday reported 1,553 new COVID-19 cases, informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Among them, 1,391 people contracted the disease through contact. Kerala also reported 10 deaths and 1,950 recoveries on Thursday.

Pinarayi Vijayan stated that Kerala had been reporting less number of cases as less number of tests were being conducted due to Onam. Kerala’s Covid positivity rate is above 8. This must be maintained below 5, he said.

Over 50 percent of the total cases were reported in the last 30 days. It shows that the virus transmission rate is likely to remain high.

The CM said that the next two weeks were crucial as public spaces including markets were active during Onam. It needs to be seen if this has resulted in increase in virus transmission, he added.
